6 Self Care Tips for the Holidays

In your pursuit to take care and think of others during this festive season, don’t forget the importance of tending to your own mind, body and spirt!

Here are 6 Self Care Tips:

1) De-clutter. My wardrobe always reflects my mental state — when clothes are disheveled I know it’s time to do a mental check in, and get things in order! Simply by clearing physical items away invites in mental space for new ideas, thoughts and action.

To help you get started, do this: Create a playlist you can move and dance to, adjust the length of the music to suit however long you think it will take to declutter. Once you begin, it doesn’t seem like such a daunting process and you may, dare I say, have fun!

2) Enjoy your own company. Get curled up with a good book or watch an episode of your favourite show or put on a good movie with a warm cup of hot chocolate, tea, coffee …whatever you’re into!

If you’re constantly longing for the company of others, there’s a fair chance that there’s an inner need to make conscious — a need perhaps to nurture more of your own inner joy?

What will it take to relax into your own being and move toward greater self-acceptance?

3) Get creative. It is such a gift to yourself to make something. Creation either occurs out of great pain or great love and once you’ve materialised something that was first just visualised in your mind, it can bring deep healing along with satisfaction.

What brings you joy? Baking? Dancing? Drawing? Adult colouring? Sewing? Singing? Writing a story? Painting? How about crafting your own Christmas cards rather than buying them?

4) Follow a schedule. It’s so easy to fall into chaos, to be doing a hundred things at once, or feeling so stuck as to do nothing at all — to lose all motivation. Each night, write down a list of the tasks you want accomplished the next day. Stick this on a wall where you can’t help but see it and tick off the tasks when completed. Put your self-care tasks on the list too.

5) Aromatherapy is a wonderful practice to heal and restore vitality. Burn incense; or a cleansing herb to clear and renew energy in your home or light a scented candle and meditate for five minutes. Try bath oils or essential oils to relax and comfort yourself — a sleep balm or spray can lull you into a tranquil slumber. Jasmine oil is my favourite right now!

6) Be mindful of the food you put into your body. Do you need to address over or under eating? Need to eat more fruit and veg? Or cut out something toxic? Take action now. Move towards healthy options. Your body is a love temple that requires your worship.

I’ll tell you a secretmy first love is food. It’s all too easy to eat things that lack nutritional value. Trust me. I know. So how can we bring ourselves into balance? Perhaps you’re the opposite, you follow a strict dietary regime, if so, give yourself a break. Be gentle with yourself whatever the case.
