Endings and Initiations: May’s New Moon in Aries, Bhāranī Nakshatra | Vedic Astrology
NEW MOON IN ARIES | BHĀRANĪ NAKSHATRA | VEDIC ASTROLOGY
The New Moon takes place on May 8th at 4:21 am (BST) in Aries, Bharaṇī nakshatra, the star of death and rebirth. This transformative cycle guides us to review endings and move towards new beginnings in our life.
Amāvāsyā (the time of the dark moon) is a moment to quieten the mind, turn inward, and clarify and plant the seeds of intention. What do you truly desire? What is no longer working? Where am I going? Pause. Review the past moon cycle and empty out your mind and emotions, just as the moon too prepares for an emptying and renewal.
Under the influence of Bharaṇī and fiery Aries, this New Moon brings themes of purification, ego identity death, and new creative energy, with a particular focus on relationships, as Venus conjoins Sun and Moon.
Sun is exalted here in Aries, who represents the physical Self and how you show up with purpose and motivation. This is a great cycle for reinvigoration through discipline, healthy habits, and yogic practices that support physical and mental purification.
BHĀRANĪ NAKSHATRA
A new beginning is ready to birth, but not without some pain of letting go — the symbol of Bharaṇī, where the New Moon is transiting, is after all, a yoni, the womb that bears new life; a portal between worlds. This nakshatra’s planetary lord is Venus, amplifying issues related to relationships, home, heart, women, beauty, vitality, etc., and is ruled by Yamaraja, who weighs our karma after death and delivers justice.
He holds the power to move between realms and escorts souls to Pitṛloka, the ancestral plane. This theme of transportation is activated, especially with Venus close by, who represents vehicles, yet the focus is on otherworldly experiences, due to Yamaraja’s ability for astral travel.
As the God of Death, who judges our deeds, he reminds us that there are consequences to every action we take — or don’t take. We must also review our worldly attachments and comforts, which Venus reflects, because Yamaraja encourages restraint. Evaluate that which you cannot take with you during the final journey in your current manifestation. Reflect on what is truly important and release what no longer holds significance on the path that is opening up now.
Bharaṇī possesses Apabharani Shakti, the power to carry things away that have come to their end, clear obstacles, and receive results. It possesses great strength to endure and initiate and is therefore known as the ‘bearer’. Consequently, there is much creative potential in this new moon cycle.
AKSHAYA TRITTIYA
Akshaya Trittiya, the most auspicious day in the Hindu calendar, falls shortly after the New Moon, on May 10th, 2024. With both the Sun and Moon exalted on this day, this is a special time that promises unending positive results! According to authentic dharmic wisdom, actions taken for the benefit of the world contribute to punya karma, counteracting negative effects and reducing karmic debt. To ensure lasting goodness on this day, focus on compassionate acts of charity, taking steps that support the well-being of other beings and the environment around you.
