When you’re lost, return home.
We are coming to the end of the month of Magha in the Hindu Calendar, which gets its name from the constellation of the ancestors. It is a period of celebrations and events which include Vasant Panchami, an honouring of the birth of Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, wisdom and the arts. A form of Durga, it is believed that the Goddess descends to earth at this time, signalling the onset of Spring. Magha, nevertheless culminates in Purnima, the full moon happening today (16th).
Awakening the knowledge, wisdom and ways of the ancestors in removing the ignorances that keep us stuck in shadow is one way to make good use of this important time. Also, any ritual performed on this day is said to bring beneficial results.
FULL MOON IN LEO, Magha Nakshatra, February 16th
Potent with the Sun’s light, which is the soul’s light, Chandra arrives full in the sign of Leo, in the nakshatra of the Pitrs, the ancestors. Magha, symbolised by a throne, holds a king-like energy, it is regal, like the lion, and indicates one’s seat of power. This is the star space from which the ancestors watch over us and where our roots are tethered. Their energies are currently enlivened through this bright full moon. We pay our respects to them as it is through their karmas that we are born.
The actions we perform in this lifetime affect the family karma, just as their karma now affect us in this lifetime. On this day, we strengthen our dharma (our duty) towards our lineage.
If you’re disconnected from your family system, you can find your way home through creating and building your connection with the ancestors.
Ask for guidance at your alter, in meditation and stillness, bring regular offerings, and pay attention to soul whispers, to dreams, and to signs and symbols in waking life. You are never alone. Magha reminds us of our spiritual support system — our roots.
RITUAL ~
For your full moon ritual, create or clean up your ancestral alter. Bring an offering from nature or any gift from your heart and place it here. Tend to the alter by lighting a flame. This is the conduit through which the deities and ancestors receive your thoughts, asks and wishes. No doubt there is a connection between these two, particularly at this time with Ketu the shadow node, who rules Magha, being energised right now. Is there some awareness coming to light right now with regards to familial relationships or lack there of? The choices you make now are important for your personal growth and life lessons.
